In June 2004, IEEE 802.3 ratified a new amendment to the Ethernet standard – IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM). This new standard adapts Ethernet – the best known and most widely used LAN technology in history – for deployments in carrier access networks. With EFM, complex and costly ATM or SONET/SDH access networks can be migrated to simpler, more cost-effective Ethernet access networks, resulting in immediate savings in capital and operating expenditures, as well as increased bandwidth and service options to the subscriber.
