Verizon Sets Energy-Use Standards
06/06/2008
Verizon Communications Inc. has set its own energy-use standards for network, data center and customer equipment in what it said is a first for a telecommunications provider. "This is similar to a consumer buying appliances according to the standardized Energy Star efficiency levels," said Mark Wegleitner, senior vice president-corporate network and technology. "However, in most cases, an Energy Star-type rating system did not exist for the equipment we buy, so we set up our own standards and measurement process to create an effective program.” Telecom Energy StandardsThe standards will apply to certain broadband, video, data-center, network and CPE purchased after Jan. 1, 2009. Verizon has told its manufacturers it aims to attain 20 percent greater efficiency than gear now in use. “We want to be part of the drive toward greater energy efficiency," Wegleitner said. "Part of our plan to accomplish this is to request our suppliers' help in meeting our conservation goals." Verizon has submitted the concepts and measurement methods to standards bodies such as ATIS' Network Interface, Power and Protection Committee for consideration.
