Harmonic Ad Splicer Passes Microsoft Mediaroom Test
10/21/2008
Harmonic Inc. (HLIT) today announced that its ProStream 2000 digital video splicer has completed conformance testing for real-time splicing of national MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video streams with Microsoft Corp.’s (MSFT) Mediaroom IPTV platform. The splicer enables service providers to perform integrated digital ad insertion. The test for the ProStream 2000 platform was administered by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Mediaroom Interoperability and Qualification Lab (IQ Lab) program. The Harmonic news comes on the heels of Microsoft’s announcement of a multifaceted advertising system for telcos that use its Mediaroom IPTV platform. The company spent nearly $7 billion on two key acquisitions to acquire the components it needed. “Microsoft Mediaroom customers now have another way to build connected TV services and applications that will ultimately help drive new revenue streams and provide consumers with personalized TV experiences,” said Christine Heckart, general manager of marketing of the Connected Television Division at Microsoft, in prepared comments. Microsoft Mediaroom enables connected TV features and experiences, such as simultaneous recording of multiple high-definition and standard-definition TV channels, personal media sharing, whole-home and remote digital video recording (DVR), and multiple picture-in-picture scenarios.
