Carrier Ethernet vendor Gridpoint Systems has unveiled a metro network edge solution aimed at helping service providers more efficiently allocate bandwidth utilization and monetize their broadband services.

“Network operators have three options for managing ever-increasing bandwidth demands from their customers. They can overbuild with current technologies, restrict the bandwidth usage of individual customers, or evolve their metro networks to be more efficient and flexible,” said Jim Arseneault, CEO of Gridpoint Systems, a two-and-a-half-year-old company which previously unveiled a control plane solution but is still in carrier trials and had yet to announce any customers as of early June. “Our Carrier Ethernet solutions solve the metro bandwidth bottleneck by turning all packets into paying packets and evolving existing networks to deliver profitable Ethernet transport and associated services.”

3400 Intelligent Carrier Ethernet Edge Node

According to Gridpoint, the 3400 Intelligent Carrier Ethernet Edge Node is a high-density, line-card based solution with end-to-end service quality measurement; a tunnel shaping capability that results in 30 percent or great network efficiency; service steering that ensures the appropriate traffic is assigned to the correct paths on the network; and SONET/SDH and OTN interfaces for seamless integration with existing transport networks.

The Gridpoint solution, which supports both PBB and PBB-TE, also is unique in its ability to scale to 10G capacity, added Arseneault.

The 3400 will makes it public debut later this month at the NXTcomm show in Las Vegas. Arseneault said Gridpoint expects to make the Carrier Ethernet product commercially available later this year.
