dPacket.org Promotes Deep Packet Inspection

Paula Bernier

We’ve been hearing a lot about deep packet inspection (DPI) lately. Brace yourself to hear a whole lot more. A new organization called dPacket.org has launched a website aiming to promote and facilitate discussion and collaboration around DPI, a technology that enables network operators to better enforce network security by filtering data over the network by payload, not just header information.

Founding sponsors or dPacket.org promoting network security include Allot Networks, Bivio Networks, Cloudshield Technologies, Ellacoya Networks (now part of Arbor Networks), LSI Corp., nPulse Networks, Qosmos, Sandvine and Solera Networks.

Deep Packet Inspection

“You can’t tell what’s running on the network without DPI,” said Kyle Rosenthal, dPacket’s executive director. “If you want to manage a network you need to be able to have that kind of identification.”

Rosenthal told xchange that creating APIs, or a common framework, relating to deep packet inspection is one of things for which people have talked about using the site.
