Broadband Forum Preps Release of New IPTV Standards

Bob Wallace
10/17/2008

In its ongoing battle to provide operators and their suppliers standards for network services, the Broadband Forum, formerly the DSL Forum, will detail BroadbandSuite Release 3.0 at the Telco TV conference next month.

The suite comprises the broad-based group’s very latest standards. To demonstrate their value, the forum will host a multivendor industry showcase to draw attention to where in the video services ecosystem the new standards come into play.

Creating standards for IPTV is a seemingly never-ending effort encompassing the work of the forum, along with other U.S. and international groups. The long IPTV ecosystem and the interrelated nature of all the pieces make these works more complex.

The Broadband Forum describes its mission as being “to develop the full potential of broadband,” with a focus on “home-to-core network and management solutions, its standards empower providers to achieve more with their broadband deployment.”

Established in 1994 as the ADSL Forum and later as the DSL Forum, the Broadband Forum has seen its work over the past 14 years evolve from addressing physical layer ADSL transport specifications to advanced transport and management specifications for all forms of broadband, including fiber. It was renamed The Broadband Forum at the NXTCOMM show this past June.

The Broadband Forum will provide tours of the showcase, provide an overview of Release 3.0, and discuss the impact these specifications will have on the market and the IPTV industry, according to a spokesperson for the group, adding that an IPTV application note and a Release 3.0 Reference Guide will also be available.

The list of vendors participating in the showcase includes Adtran, ClearAccess, Comtrend, Corning Cable Systems, Ericsson, Juniper Networks, Motive, Motorola and Occam Networks, according to the forum.
